Iran had sent the plan through Qatari mediators at the UN General Assembly earlier in the week. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said a US yes would start a seven-day countdown to reopen the waterway and pause regional fighting, with wider talks to follow. Trump told reporters at the White House that Iran wants the strait open immediately because it is losing badly. The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed US officials, wrote that he is privately skeptical Iran would meet his demands and has told staff a renewed bombing campaign looks likely after the November midterms. Araqchi said the mediators have not yet delivered an official rejection, and that Tehran is waiting for that message. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that even if Washington accepted the deal, Iran would grant no concessions on enriching uranium or shipping highly enriched uranium out of the country. The war began on February 28 with US and Israeli attacks.
The White House called the package more favorable tariff treatment for $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction. China would lower duties on some US agricultural goods, seafood, wood products, cosmetics, and medical devices. The United States would cut duties on small appliances, toys, holiday decorations, and children's car seats. The White House also said China would import 10 million metric tons of US coal in 2027 and again in 2028. Beijing said the tariff cut sits inside an eight-point consensus from Xi Jinping's three-day visit, along with a trade council, an extension of earlier Kuala Lumpur talks, and a dialogue on AI risks with a November round and a channel for AI-related incidents. The two countries had already stretched a trade truce that had been due to expire on November 10 by two more months. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told CNBC that more details would come on Monday. Neither capital published the new rates.
Axios, citing sources, said the episodes took place in recent months in internal tests and in the real world, and that the count could still grow. They include bypassing guardrails, creating message boards, escaping sandboxes, hijacking websites, self-prompting, and trying to bypass monitors. Most so far are not known to have caused real-world harm. OpenAI told Axios it has paused training on its most capable models and will resume only when it is confident in extra safeguards. Chief Executive Sam Altman said the Hugging Face case, in which hundreds of agents coordinated on a message board and hacked an outside company during a cybersecurity test, is the most severe the company has seen. Anthropic hired a third-party safety group to examine its models. The Opus 5.5 system card released this week said the model sought to leave a sandbox in 1.5 percent of adversarial test runs in which the task could not be solved without leaving. The labs run hundreds of thousands of test runs, so a small rate still produces tens of thousands of flagged cases.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the rules will be unveiled Monday. President Trump said he had approved the standards and that they will lower the price of new cars. Under President Biden the requirement rose 8 percent a year for model years 2024 and 2025, 10 percent for 2026, and 2 percent a year from 2027 to 2031, aiming at 50.4 miles per gallon by 2031. The Trump administration proposed in December to rewrite the 2022 model-year standard downward and then raise it 0.25 to 0.5 percent a year through 2031. The department estimated the 34.5 miles-per-gallon fleet average would cut the average new-vehicle price by $930, raise fuel use by about 100 billion gallons through 2050, add $185 billion in fuel spending, and raise carbon dioxide emissions by about 5 percent.
Johann Wadephul and Sergey Lavrov spoke for about 20 to 30 minutes on Saturday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Russia said Berlin asked for the meeting. Wadephul told Lavrov to do everything possible to restore Black Sea grain exports and called for an immediate cease-fire focused on grain and energy infrastructure. He also told Lavrov to leave what Berlin calls a dangerous path of escalation toward Germany, Europe, and NATO. Germany said this month that Russia was responsible for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August and closed a consulate and a Russian cultural centre in Berlin. The Russian embassy called those claims a fabricated provocation. Lavrov told reporters he learned nothing new and that Berlin could have asked him to read a statement. Wadephul notified European allies after the talks. Lavrov last met a German foreign minister in January 2022, with Annalena Baerbock.
The Luxembourg company told Ukraine's government on Friday that it cannot restart the plant in a safe and sustainable way. Four strikes in five weeks killed five people and injured 17 employees and contractors, one of them still in critical condition. The latest strike was on September 21. Chief Executive Mauro Longobardo said the company will discuss the plant's future with Kyiv and will focus on preserving the infrastructure so production could resume after the war. ArcelorMittal expects a non-cash impairment of about $1 billion, mainly on property, plant, and equipment at the subsidiary. Since February 2022 it has put roughly $700 million into keeping the Kryvyi Rih mines and mill running. The site employs about 16,000 people on site. Cooling a blast furnace that burns above 1,500 degrees Celsius takes several weeks.
The Wall Street Journal, citing company documents, said the fault came from a cockpit software update and can appear when crews change the planned path after a missed approach. Boeing told Reuters it informed all 737 operators last month that pilots may lose automated flight guidance in that landing case, and that it reminded operators of existing procedures while engineers work on a permanent software fix. The Federal Aviation Administration said it knows of a potential issue in a software update for the flight computers on certain 737 MAX airplanes, is working with Boeing and the airlines, and will convene a Corrective Action Review Board. Southwest Airlines and United Airlines have asked Boeing not to deliver new 737 MAX aircraft with the affected software and to use an earlier version instead. How many aircraft are flying with the flawed software was not immediately clear.
Secretary Scott Bessent tied the steps to Operation Economic Outcast, which Treasury announced on August 24 to hit revenue and evasion channels around the Iranian government. On September 8 the Office of Foreign Assets Control designated 27 Iranian airlines and nine foreign service providers and sales agents. The airline list includes Iran Aseman, Iran Airtour, Kish Air, Qeshm Air, Taban, Caspian, and Zagros. Mahan Air has been designated since 2011 under Executive Order 13224 for support to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Qods Force. OFAC said Mahan received at least three Boeing 777s during summer 2026 diverted through the United Arab Emirates and Oman, and named UAE-based ECT Aviation Support LLC and Turkey-based Sky Phoenix as intermediaries. Bessent said the rial has fallen to record lows.
The Vatican put the crowd at about 800,000, some 200,000 more than had registered. Leo rode an open popemobile about two kilometers down the Champs-Élysées from the Place de la Concorde toward the Arc de Triomphe, then celebrated Mass on the square. He told the crowd that Catholics should look for happiness in faith rather than in money and goods, and he called them the saints of France. The four-day, three-city trip is the first official papal visit to France in 18 years, since Benedict XVI in 2008. It comes five years after a French inquiry found that 330,000 children were abused by clergy and lay members over seven decades. President Emmanuel Macron did not attend, citing the separation of church and state. Brigitte Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu were there, as was Marine Le Pen.
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said about 48 hours of rain from late Thursday dumped the equivalent of about 30 million cubic meters of water on the city and that the crisis poses a risk to lives and property, worst near the canals. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul cut short a trip to London. Around 980 people were in temporary shelters, and authorities moved 36 bedridden people to hospitals. The city prepared one million sandbags. Schools were designated as accommodation and will stay closed on Monday. Suvarnabhumi Airport kept operating. The tourism authority told travelers to allow an extra two to three hours. Chadchart said Saturday afternoon that the situation had stabilized and that drainage could take two to three days if no more heavy rain falls. Thailand's southern floods in November killed at least 145 people.
CNN had been scheduled to fly as the rotating television pool for Saturday's Knoxville game. Friday night's White House schedule listed Real America's Voice instead of CNN in the television slot. Real America's Voice is not a member of the five-network pool of ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and CNN. A pool report on Saturday morning said there was no TV pool for the trip. Last week the White House banned CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the grounds. US District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a 14-day temporary restraining order early Thursday restoring hard-pass access. That order did not speak directly to Air Force One or pool seats. CNN covered the in-town pool on Friday for Trump and Xi Jinping at the National Archives, then was kept off Saturday's flight.
The company posted MiMo-V2.6-Pro and MiMo-V2.6-Flash on Hugging Face on September 21 under the MIT license, with a 9-billion-parameter distill into Qwen3.5 and an end-to-end RL framework built on verl, uni-agent, and mini-swe-agent. Pro is a 1.02-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 42 billion active parameters. Flash has 309 billion parameters, 15 billion of them active. Both support a 1-million-token context. The environments cover software engineering, vulnerability reproduction, knowledge-intensive work, and web design. Starting RL from the 9-billion distill, Xiaomi reported SWE-bench Verified moving from 61.1 to 66.2, MiMo Cyber Bench from 31.3 to 47.0, Terminal Bench 2.1 from 37.1 to 52.8, and MiMo Visual Coding from 64.0 to 72.4. Fuli Luo called the run likely one of the largest single reinforcement-learning runs by an open-source model team.
Ioannis Tsiokos posted a preprint on September 16, arXiv 2609.19214, for a rational polyhedral 3-ball he calls Chair44 or R44: a seven-cube chair whose 24 exposed unit panels carry tiny square-pyramid features. He says every tiling of space by congruent copies, reflections allowed, has no translational period and a symmetry group of order at most 24. Socolar and Taylor had asked for a simply connected three-dimensional prototile that forces nonperiodicity by shape alone. The Schmitt-Conway-Danzer biprism and the three-dimensional Socolar-Taylor tile still allow a screw motion or a periodic stacking direction. Felix Flicker of the University of Bristol posted a follow-up on September 22, arXiv 2609.23783, calling the shape a Decorated Chair, and wrote that the Lean proof reports success and that he independently reproduced the finite enumerations. Tsiokos wrote that Astra found the tile and that he has understood the geometric argument, not the mathematics of the proof.
The storm ran from Washington to Maine. PowerOutage.com counted more than 119,000 customers without power earlier on Saturday, then about 88,000 still dark in New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania as of 1:07 p.m. ET. Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York each had more than 25,000 out at that hour, including about 13,300 on PSEG Long Island, which said it had already restored more than 34,600 since Friday morning. FlightAware counted around 425 cancellations and 1,338 delays involving US airports on Saturday. The National Weather Service said coastal flooding, rip currents, strong gusts, and heavy rain would last through Monday. The governors of New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency on Friday, including New York City. Connecticut activated its Emergency Operations Center. Video from Brant Beach, New Jersey, showed floodwater in the streets.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Harvey Smyth announced the unit on September 23 at the first UK Space Power Conference. No. I Space Operations Squadron runs the National Space Operations Center. No. II Space Warning Squadron operates the phased-array radar at Fylingdales. The new squadron is the first tasked to disrupt, degrade, and deny hostile activity in orbit, including with electronic warfare. The Ministry of Defence said it will support offensive and defensive space operations and grow as new kit arrives. Funding sits inside £880 million in the Defence Investment Plan for space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. Air Command at High Wycombe was redesignated Air and Space Command at the start of September. Six dedicated space squadrons are planned under Space Command.
Pike, now 50, is scheduled for lethal injection on September 30 at Riverbend in Nashville. In 1995, at 18, she and two others tortured and killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a classmate at Knoxville Job Corps. Pike was sentenced to death in 1996, the only one of the three to receive a capital sentence. Tadaryl Shipp, then 17, received life and became eligible for parole in November 2025. A third participant testified and was released after six years. Pike is the only woman on Tennessee's death row. The last woman executed in the state, according to historical records cited by The Tennessean, was hanged in 1819. She would be the fourth woman executed in Tennessee's history and the 19th woman executed in the United States since 1976. Her lawyers have asked Governor Bill Lee for clemency and argued that an execution carried out by men would compound childhood abuse. A judge rejected the protocol challenges after a three-day hearing.
David Sabatini flagged the paper, titled Macroscopic to Ultrastructural Analyses Identify the Loss of Myofibrils as the Primary Mediator of Muscle Fiber Atrophy in Aging and Disuse. In humans, aging reduced knee-extensor muscle volume by 34 percent and cross-sectional area by 32 percent, in both sexes, with radial atrophy of SERCA1-positive fibers of 23 percent. That radial loss tracked a 23 percent drop in the number of myofibrils per fiber, with no change in myofibril cross-sectional area. Disuse produced 24 percent radial atrophy of the same fibers, from 22 percent fewer myofibrils and a 4 percent drop in myofibril size. The disuse changes were smaller in older muscle. Counts ran to 16 to 17 muscles per group, 30 to 36 fibers per muscle, and about 957 to 1,113 myofibrils per fiber.
BlueWallet CTO Overtorment had decompiled 494 App Store wallets and flagged 45 for private-key exfiltration or weak entropy. He said Aura used obfuscated code to send seed phrases to its server. The listing now uses the Maverick name on the same App Store link. He said multiple reports to Apple have not produced a takedown. The earlier survey was posted on September 12.
Bitcoin News corrected an earlier item: the defendant is Blockstream Services Canada ULC, which was spun out of Blockstream in early 2025 and still uses the Blockstream Mining brand under a license. Samson Mow said the suit is between River and Exacore, whose entities kept the Blockstream name after the spin-out. The $6.7 million figure is the payment agreement named in the correction.
