Trump had rejected a proposal, sent through Qatari mediators, for a seven-day countdown to reopen the strait and pause the fighting. He told Axios that Tehran's conditions were something Washington might have accepted about a year ago, that Iran had overplayed its hand, and that he expects talks to resume this week. The war began on 28 February with US and Israeli strikes.
Abbas Araghchi said Iran is prepared for the war to resume, including what he called a doomsday war, and that diplomacy remains open. The remark followed Trump's rejection of the seven-day Hormuz plan. Araghchi had said a US yes would start that countdown and that wider talks would follow. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that even a US yes would bring no concession on enriching uranium or on shipping highly enriched uranium out of the country.
Kpler's Homayoun Falakshahi told Asharq Bloomberg that the average through 24 September was about 6.27 million barrels a day, up about 84 percent from 3.41 million in August. The gain came from Ras Tanura on the Gulf after a drone attack shut the East-West pipeline to the Red Sea. Tankers have been using a US Navy lane along the coast of Oman. Kpler's seven-day average through Hormuz was about 13.2 million barrels a day, against about 17 million before the war. Aramco chief Amin Nasser told Nikkei last week that the East-West line is a multi-phase system and that the company is still looking at extra export routes and storage outside the kingdom.
Gloucestershire Police received a call at 00:45 BST about three suspicious vehicles heading toward the base. Officers arrested the five men near Whelford, about two miles southeast, first under the Explosives Act and then on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. A bomb-disposal team set a 400-meter cordon around vehicles, and dozens of nearby homes were evacuated. Counter-terror police are leading the case. The men have not been named and remain in custody. Under the Terrorism Act they can be held for up to 14 days. RAF Fairford is a US Air Force forward site, home of the 501st Combat Support Wing, and has been used by B-1 bombers in the Iran war. The BBC reported that the operation was not intelligence-led, and a senior detective said she believed the matter was contained.
David Perdue, the ambassador in Beijing, said it on Fox News Sunday. He quoted Trump telling Xi that the United States sells arms around the world, and that Trump then asked whether Xi would like to buy some. Perdue did not say when the question was put or what Xi answered. He was answering questions about a delay on a Taiwan arms package reported at about $14 billion. Perdue said Trump has already approved $11 billion in arms for Taiwan, that support for Taiwan has not changed, and that the One China policy still stands. He also said Xi, during the Washington visit, backed keeping Iran free of nuclear weapons and keeping Hormuz open without tolls.
Eight gunmen killed 17 people, 13 men and 4 women, at a bar near Johannesburg on Saturday evening and wounded 15 more. They fired outside, continued inside, and torched two vehicles. In the early hours of Sunday, 10 people were killed and 11 wounded outside an entertainment venue in a township near Cape Town. Five of the Cape Town dead died at the scene and five in hospital. Gauteng police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said people from Ethiopia and Lesotho were among those caught up in the Johannesburg attack and that most of the victims were South African. He said robbery was the working motive because belongings were taken, and that a turf fight among illegal mining groups was still possible. Deputy commissioner Fred Kekana told AFP the attack may have been retaliation for a shooting last month. No arrests had been made by Sunday morning. Eleven people were killed days earlier when gunmen stormed a house in KwaMakhutha, Durban. South Africa records about 60 murders a day in a country of 62 million.
He told supporters outside the presidency in Belgrade that it was his last evening in the building. The constitution bars a third presidential term, and this term was due to end in May 2027. He said in June that he would leave early. On 9 September he dissolved parliament and set a snap election for 25 October. The presidential vote has to come within three months of the resignation, and he said it will fall more than a month after the parliamentary poll. Parliamentary speaker Ana Brnabić, of his Serbian Progressive Party, becomes interim president. He pardoned 49 people, including 23 students, for offences tied to the protest year, the public broadcaster RTS reported. The protests began after the Novi Sad station roof collapsed in 2024 and killed 16 people. The October ballot pits his party against a student list, Students Win, and a pro-EU coalition, European Serbia. He was prime minister from 2014 and president from 2017.
The Neutrality Initiative would have barred sanctions unless the UN approved them, and it would have barred closer ties with NATO. The Swiss People's Party backed it. The federal government and the other large parties opposed it. Russia backed it in public. Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said the ban on selling arms to countries at war, including Ukraine, stays in place, and that neutrality has always been applied with some flexibility. The Hague Convention of 1907 is the legal frame, and the Congress of Vienna recognized Swiss neutrality in 1815. Lukas Golder of the Gfs.bern institute told SRF that the vote left the sanction on Russia in place.
The Information, citing two people, said the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology asked the companies how many RTX Pro 5500 units they want and what they would use them for, and told some firms it intends to approve the purchases. The chip is built for high-end workstations. US export rules since October 2022 have focused on data-center accelerators. An Nvidia spokesperson said US firms are still limited by old export rules and by China's own limits on US imports. Reuters could not verify the report. Alibaba and ByteDance had not commented. At last week's Trump-Xi summit, chip controls were absent from both public readouts. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told CNBC that export controls treated as national security were taken off the table in the trade talks.
Foro Penal vice-president Gonzalo Himiob said a significant number left several detention centers early Saturday. Among them was Wilder Vasquez, sentenced to five years in 2018 on a claim he plotted to kill Nicolás Maduro, and Miguel Castillo Cedeño, held since June 2019. Frank Cabañas, held nine years in a case tied to the death of a police officer, was also freed. The government has not said the releases followed Tuesday's meeting in New York between interim president Delcy Rodríguez and Trump. Rodríguez told the General Assembly on Thursday that there will be elections, and she gave no date. The release program slowed in April after she said it was coming to an end. Foro Penal said it stopped with fewer than half of the political prisoners out. The US seized Maduro in January and backed Rodríguez, his former vice-president. The 2024 vote, which Maduro's government said he won, was disputed. Opposition tallies put their candidate ahead by about 70 percent of the vote.
Zelensky told the General Assembly on Wednesday that Ukraine had sent two captured North Korean soldiers to South Korea. They were taken in Russia's Kursk region in January 2025, the first North Korean soldiers captured alive after Pyongyang sent troops to the war in 2024. President Lee Jae Myung wrote that the two governments had agreed to keep the transfer confidential and that the disclosure was deeply regrettable. On Sunday, senior presidential secretary Seong Ghi-hong said Seoul wants an official explanation and an apology, called Ukraine's denial of a nondisclosure agreement false, and said the government is considering further steps. A Blue House official told reporters that Kyiv had flagged the speech in advance and that the exact wording was unclear.
The road is a Catholic district in the largely Protestant town. Marches down it were banned in 1998 after years of violence, the same year as the Good Friday Agreement. The Parades Commission on Friday allowed 35 people to walk it between 8:00 and 9:30 a.m., with no bands and no supporters. A High Court challenge by residents ended at 02:15 BST on Sunday when Justice Humphreys dismissed it. First Minister Michelle O'Neill and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald were in the crowd. Prime Minister Andy Burnham called for calm. The original Drumcree dispute was one of the set-piece confrontations of the Troubles, which killed about 3,600 people.
Senators are chosen by local officials and members of the National Assembly. Of 348 seats, 178 were filled on Sunday, each for six years. A caucus needs 10 members. Marine Le Pen said the result cleared that bar for the first time and exceeded the party's expectations. AFP and party vice-president Sébastien Chenu put the new National Rally and UDR group at 14, up from three National Rally senators who sat with the non-inscrits. Nine of the seats were won on Sunday under the National Rally label and two under Eric Ciotti's UDR. The Republicans and their allies keep the majority. Le Monde's count had the Republicans at at least 127 seats, down from 131, with three regions still out late Sunday. Le Pen is the party's candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
Assembly Bill 2409, by Avelino Valencia of Anaheim, passed the Senate 40-0 and the Assembly 78-0 and was enrolled on 3 September. It forbids a public officer or public employee from issuing a meme coin. A digital-asset service provider may not list, for a California resident, a meme coin issued on or after 1 January 2027 that is offered by or with a federal public official or a state or local public officer. Enforcement is civil. The attorney general can seek an injunction and disgorgement. Tokens such as Dogecoin, with no official behind them, sit outside the rule. Newsom signed it on Sunday with a wider package that includes Senate Bill 1208, by Tim Grayson, on recovering money lost to crypto fraud.
Axios reported the Sunday dinner from sources familiar, and Politico confirmed it with a person familiar. It is the first one-on-one meeting between the two. Amodei missed last week's state dinner, where Sam Altman and Sundar Pichai were present, because of a scheduling conflict, and Trump invited him afterward. On Tuesday, Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are due to meet a group of AI chief executives. An Anthropic spokesperson had not commented when Politico asked. Axios reviewed a hostile brief about Amodei that opponents were circulating toward the White House before the dinner. Its author is unknown. A White House official said Trump's line is that America will lead in super intelligence and protect consumers.
The government notice for 28 September says the package includes three floating docks, under the name Programme Euston, for the submarine service at HM Naval Base Clyde. The docks will be awarded in a UK-only competition so inspections and repairs on current and future nuclear submarines stay in Britain. The same notice adds funding for a marine research vessel. Healey, now chancellor, called it a new age of industrialisation and tied the spending to jobs on the Clyde and at suppliers across the country.
The home secretary is due to say so on Monday in Liverpool. Referrals to the UK resettlement scheme stopped in December 2024. The reopened scheme gives priority to Afghan women and girls, Palestinians, and people with disabilities. LBC reported that about one in four arrivals are expected to be Afghan women and girls and Palestinians, that the first numbers will be in the hundreds, and that a yearly cap will apply, with the total rising into the low thousands if irregular crossings fall. The partners are the UN refugee agency and the International Refugee Assistance Project. People who arrive on these routes get a five-year path to permanent settlement. Community and study sponsors can apply from October. A work-sponsor route is planned for spring 2027.
The Monday report covers the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, France, and Belgium, which together account for 46 percent of new heavy-truck sales in the EU. Over five years, the group puts the saving at up to €100,000 in the Netherlands, €85,000 in Germany, and €69,000 in Denmark, with the purchase premium paid back in about two years. It prices a Chinese electric truck at about €210,000 and a European equivalent at about €265,000, and says the Chinese truck would add about €34,000 of savings over five years in Germany. The diesel move is tied to this year's Iran war. Daimler Truck, Volvo Group, and Traton's Scania are the European makers facing that price gap.
The slide hit a base camp in Manang district on Sunday morning. Himlung Himal is 7,126 meters and sits on the Nepal-Tibet border. The group was a Nepalese advance party sent to fix ropes before foreign clients arrived. Bibhuti Chand Thakur of Himalaya Holidays Trekking told AFP that at least eight members of his team were missing. Snow and cloud kept helicopters out. A rescue team flown from Kathmandu was due to try again on Monday. Climbers had already left Manaslu, the world's eighth-highest peak, earlier in the week because of avalanche risk. In August a glacial collapse sent a flood down the Trishuli valley. More than 1,400 people are confirmed dead there, and more than 6,000 are still missing.
Houthi authorities gave the casualty count. Government sources said a Houthi camp nearby was the target. Al Jazeera said the two accounts are hard to check independently. Taiz has been a divided front-line city since the war that began when the Houthis took Sanaa in 2014. The same day's BBC report from the city described ongoing fighting for control of neighborhoods.
Medical sources in Gaza gave Al Jazeera the count for strikes since dawn. The same desk's live coverage that day also carried the Taiz market strike and the helicopter strike near Mayfadoun.
Al Jazeera said an Apache helicopter hit the center and that shelling continued across the south. A US-brokered ceasefire framework is the standing arrangement. Strikes have continued under that framework. The report did not give a casualty count for the Mayfadoun strike.
The figure is from a 2026 paper in Nature Reviews Drug Discovery. An 84 percent increase over the pre-2000 list works out to about 12 to 15 new targets a year. The human genome working draft was published in 2001, and the review's point is that the list of proteins a new drug is built to hit has grown slowly since then.
