Valor Econômico's updated tally put Senator Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party at 47.48% and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Workers' Party at 44.63%, with Augusto Cury at 2.91%, Renan Santos at 2.26%, Ronaldo Caiado at 2.21%, and Romeu Zema at 0.28%. Blank ballots were 1.84% and null ballots 2.92%. A first-round win takes more than half of valid votes, and the runoff is on 25 October. Folha de S.Paulo tracked Flávio above 50% until about 65% of stations had reported, when he stood at 49.58% and Lula at 42.25%. An Atlas/Bloomberg poll on 3 October had Lula at 47% of valid votes and Flávio at 44.1%. Lula is 80 and is seeking a fourth term. Flávio's father, Jair Bolsonaro, is in prison for plotting a coup. Folha also reported that Carlos Bolsonaro and Carol de Toni won Santa Catarina's Senate seats, and that Fernando Haddad called Tarcísio de Freitas to congratulate him.
Al-Alimi said in a televised address from Riyadh that the operations would extend the state's authority across the whole country. The Houthis have held Sanaa for more than a decade and last month took the coast, including the Bab al-Mandab strait. Spokesman Yahya Saree said the group hit Aramco sites in Riyadh and at Khurais with a ballistic missile and drones, and described the strike as an answer to 50 Saudi-led coalition raids in 12 hours. Saudi Arabia has not confirmed those raids. AFP, citing three Yemeni military sources, said the Houthis cut the supply road between Taiz and Aden and encircled Taiz, which the recognised government still holds. Farea Al-Muslimi of Chatham House told AFP the Houthis had isolated Taiz from Aden.
By 22:02 GMT, Brent was up 81 cents, or 0.79%, at $103.06 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate was up 46 cents, or 0.50%, at $91.57. Prices had fallen on Friday after European governments agreed to release diesel reserves at President Trump's request. Brent was about $73 before the Iran war began in late February. The United States has run a maritime blockade on Iranian crude since July, and Friday's G7 statement released 100 million barrels of diesel and crude through the International Energy Agency over four months.
Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Algeria, Kazakhstan, and Oman took the decision in a short online meeting on Sunday. The same seven pumped 25 million barrels a day in August, up 630,000 from July and still about 5 million below the February level from before the war. About 2 million barrels a day of cuts remain in place for the wider group. A review of each member's capacity, which would set how any later increase is shared, has been delayed, and sources told Reuters that changes to output are unlikely before 2027. The seven meet again on 1 November. The Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee, meeting the same day, repeated its concern about attacks on energy infrastructure.
Paknejad has been oil minister of the OPEC member since August 2024. Mehdi Tabatabaei, communications deputy in the president's office, said Paknejad had asked to leave for personal reasons a long time ago and that President Masoud Pezeshkian accepted at his insistence. Bovard is chief executive of the National Iranian Oil Company. IRNA said the decree cited Article 135 of the constitution. Before the announcement, Paknejad told state media that money from oil already sold was still arriving. The war with the United States is in its eighth month.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the package covers weapons for immediate use and support for the energy system before winter. Air-raid sirens sounded while Merz was in the city. The Pivnichnyi Bridge was hit on Sunday for a second day, after the Pivdennyi Bridge was struck earlier in the week. About 500,000 vehicles use Kyiv's bridges each day. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said two people were injured and that a drone damaged a heating main, cutting hot water in the Desnyanskyi district. Zelensky said a drone strike on a warehouse in Sumy killed one person and that six were injured when a communications site in Dnipro was hit. Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 135 drones overnight, 52 of them jet-powered, and that 125 were shot down. Merz has been chancellor since May 2025, and Germany is the largest single donor to Ukraine. Russia's defence ministry said it would intensify strikes after Zelensky said Kyiv would increase attacks on Russian oil refineries.
A dozen B-1 Lancers had been at the Gloucestershire base and had been used to strike Iranian missile sites that were firing on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. A Pentagon spokesperson said all of the bombers have gone back to their home stations in the United States. The Guardian reported that a dual British-Iranian national was arrested in central London last week and that six people were taken into custody and then released on bail. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Wednesday that Britain had strong indications Iran was involved. Iran called that claim baseless and summoned the British ambassador. President Trump said the plotters had planned big damage, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio pointed to a foreign actor.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement on 7 August. It treats an armed attack on one member as an attack on all three. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defence Minister Yasar Guler, and General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu, the chief of the general staff, will attend the pact's strategic political and defence committee. The committee first met in Istanbul on 31 August and is due to place a secretariat in Riyadh. Pakistan's foreign minister said on Friday that Iran had suggested talking to the Houthis after their attacks, and that the committee would take up that idea. The Turkish statement said the meeting will cover recent events in the region and the work of turning the alliance into a standing body.
The newspaper said Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds is drawing up a package and that ministers are ready to match the European Union's levy, reported at 45%, because the EU has warned Britain could be cut out of a Made in Europe scheme and used as a back door for Chinese cars. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report. On 18 September Reynolds told Auto Express that Britain had no plan to raise the existing 10% tariff on Chinese cars. Chinese brands registered 223,000 cars in Britain in the first eight months of 2026, more than 15% of the market. In the EU, add-on duties take SAIC, the owner of MG, to about 45% and BYD to about 27%.
Dodik is banned from holding public office, so the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats ran allies. With nearly 90% of votes counted, the Guardian reported that Željka Cvijanović had more than 55% for the Serb seat on the three-member presidency, about 30 points ahead of her nearest rival. Darijana Filipović of the Croatian Democratic Union led the Croat seat, and incumbent Denis Bećirović of the Social Democrats led Bakir Izetbegović for the Bosniak seat by fewer than three points. Both Filipović and Bećirović declared victory before the count finished. The central election commission said 1,432,269 people voted, a turnout of 42%, about eight points below 2022. Dodik told supporters his aim of taking Republika Srpska out of Bosnia would stand. Bosnia has been an EU candidate while the presidency and the two entities created by the 1995 Dayton agreement remain split by party.
Spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said Lee was briefed on breaches at financial and public institutions and told officials to investigate and prepare a response. Shinhan Bank said on Thursday that names, phone numbers, and annual incomes of about 25,000 customers had leaked, and Yonhap reported that some resident registration numbers were exposed. Korea JoongAng Daily reported further leaks of 119 people at KB Kookmin Bank, 89 at Hana Bank, and 11 outsourced developers at BNK Busan Bank, plus about 40,000 customers at Yegaram Savings Bank. Financial Services Commission chairman Lee Eog-weon called an emergency meeting on Sunday. Yonhap said sources described the Shinhan intrusion as carried out with artificial intelligence tools. The regulator said on-site checks began after Shinhan's report on 30 September.
The motion passed 1,022 to 813. It calls Zionism an ethnonationalist political project and repeats the party's demand that the Labour government end the arms trade with Israel. The Greens took 6% of the vote in the 2024 general election. Leader Zack Polanski did not vote. He is standing on Thursday in the London seat Keir Starmer vacated. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar said he had barred Polanski from Israel, and the foreign ministry said it now treats the party as a body that gives legitimacy to terrorism and that the motion fails the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition because it denies the Jewish people a right of self-determination.
Musk wrote that SpaceX is a super intelligence company. On Sunday Trump announced a Super Intelligence Force. The Wall Street Journal reported that Jay Clayton, the director of national intelligence, would lead the force, keep the intelligence job, and deliver a report on the federal role in AI within 120 days. Clayton testified at his Senate Intelligence Committee nomination hearing in July.
With 97% of ballots counted from Saturday's vote, United List had 35.3%, enough for 42 seats in the 100-seat parliament, the largest share for a winner since Latvia regained independence in 1991. Latvia First followed on 13.1%, the pro-Russian Sovereign Power on 11.7%, and the National Alliance on 8.9%. Turnout was 51.8%, down from 59.4% in 2022. Kulbergs, 47, took office in May after the previous coalition fell over Ukrainian military drones that entered Latvian airspace undetected. He campaigned on more anti-drone equipment and on keeping defence spending at 5% of gross domestic product. Politico reported that National Alliance and New Unity cleared the 5% threshold and that the three parties can hold a majority without the Union of Greens and Farmers, which fell short.
Coale is already Trump's envoy for Belarus, with the new post carrying the rank of ambassador. Trump wrote on Truth Social that Coale had secured the return of more than 65 Americans and allied citizens from Belarus in the past year and had negotiated the release of more than 800 political prisoners from several Eastern European countries. Alexander Lukashenko pardoned 15 prisoners last month after talks with Coale, who has been speaking with Minsk for more than a year. Coale replaces Adam Boehler. Trump said Boehler had brought back 196 hostages, including a former Marine freed from Russia in August, and that Boehler will stay on as a senior adviser.
The term opens on Monday, the first Monday in October, and runs nine months. Boulder accuses ExxonMobil and Canada's Suncor of state-law violations and seeks money for harm from climate change. The Colorado Supreme Court let the case proceed, and the companies appealed. They told the justices that nearly 60 state and local governments have filed similar suits. A win for the companies could bring many of those cases to an end. Justice Samuel Alito has recused himself. His disclosure forms show oil and gas shares, and they do not show Exxon or Suncor. A decision is expected by the end of June.
NHK named the suspect as Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, and the victim as Yagi Anna, 39. Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said the body was found early Saturday in a hotel in Naha, the capital of Okinawa prefecture. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the crime a brutal robbery and murder and said she had urged the United States to enforce stricter discipline. The foreign ministry summoned US ambassador George Glass on Sunday. The Marine Corps said it was cooperating with Japanese authorities. Okinawa Governor Genta Koja said the prefecture has repeatedly demanded that the US prevent such crimes. Okinawa hosts several US bases and tens of thousands of American troops.
Araghchi said there is no military solution and that Iran's response would be stronger than before if it is attacked again. AFP reported that talks on ending the war appear to be at an impasse. The war began on 28 February. The United States has blockaded Iranian crude since July. On Friday the G7 released 100 million barrels of diesel and crude through the International Energy Agency. The same day, Yemen's recognised government announced an offensive against the Houthis, and the Houthis said they had hit Aramco sites in Saudi Arabia.
The ABC reported that the man was radicalised in Australia. The flight, FZ1073, left Dubai for Tel Aviv on 30 September with more than 170 passengers and was diverted to Saudi Arabia after passengers and others took control back from the co-pilot. Benjamin Netanyahu has said the co-pilot is an Omani national. The Associated Press reported on Saturday that three people familiar with the case named him as Hamam al-Hammami and said he had been flagged over extremism. UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi has called the cockpit attack an attempted terrorist act. A separate Associated Press report said the Emirates shared the passenger and crew list with Israel before the flight.
The Glacier Monitoring Network, GLAMOS, and the Swiss Academy of Sciences published the figure on 1 October. Matthias Huss, who leads the monitoring, called it a catastrophic year. Average thickness fell by 2.5 to 4 metres, and some glacier tongues lost as much as 10 metres over the summer. The Rhône, Aletsch, and Clariden glaciers had their greatest melt on record. Bella Tola in Valais and Griessfirn in Glarus disappeared. Ice volume in Switzerland is down almost 20% in five years. Ice loss in 2026 ranks just behind 2022. Many glaciers held slightly more snow than in that record year, and less Saharan dust settled on the snow, so more sunlight was reflected.
MI5 said the China General Technology Research Institute is a front company for the Ministry of State Security and that it had found more than 100 UK-linked academics who contributed to projects the ministry funded through that institute. The service said some researchers would not have known about the institute's role. An email to Queen's staff strongly advised them to review any existing or proposed work with the institute and to check the ultimate source of funding on collaborations with Chinese institutions. A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in London said the accusation was fabricated.
The conjecture asks whether an infinite connected cluster can exist exactly at the critical probability on a grid. The answer is no in two dimensions and in dimensions above ten. Hugo Duminil-Copin, who won the Fields Medal in 2022, worked on the remaining cases for years. On 28 August Justin Leder, a member of technical staff at Anthropic, posted a Claude-generated proof and a Claude-written summary on GitHub. The argument uses a 2024 inequality by Gady Kozma of the Weizmann Institute and Shahaf Nitzan of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Ahmed Bou-Rabee of the University of Pennsylvania said the substantial step was that 2024 paper and that the new proof establishes the inequality. Anthropic has made no formal announcement.
President Michael Kotlikoff called for a serious look at the role of Greek-letter houses on campus. A lawyer for the woman at the centre of the allegations said she has been targeted with threats. Reuters reported that the allegations have drawn criticism of the university's response, and Kotlikoff said the university must do better.
Thitu, which Manila calls Pag-asa, is the largest island the Philippines holds in the Spratly chain in the South China Sea. Chinese coast guard ships have repeatedly shadowed Philippine supply and patrol runs at other features in the same chain. Sunday's complaint says the blocking happened during a law-enforcement mission.
AFP said a third person was missing after torrential rain in northeast Spain. Authorities put Barcelona and the surrounding area on high alert and warned of flooding and rivers bursting their banks. The deaths were reported on Sunday.
The Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education put the wounded at more than 3,300. The count covers the war that began in October 2023. A ceasefire nearly a year ago left much of Gaza under Israeli control, and Reuters reported on Sunday that reconstruction has stalled and that displaced people abroad are still waiting to return.
One of her lawyers said on Sunday that the prognosis might not be known for days. The lethal injection was botched and left her gravely ill. A Reuters podcast on Sunday took up the resignation of Tennessee's top corrections official after the failed execution.
Schneider Electric, based in France, makes electrical equipment and the controls factories use to run machines. PTC, based in the United States, sells the software engineers use to design parts and to keep the design record as a product is built. The Financial Times reported the talks, and Reuters carried that report on Sunday.
The protests allege wrongdoing in a large revision of the voter rolls. AFP said the demonstrations come ahead of a hearing in the country's top court. India is in the middle of the revision, which the opposition says has struck valid names from the lists.
Talarico defeated Crockett in the Democratic primary earlier this year. Polymarket priced his chance of winning the seat on 3 November at 64%. The Texas race is on the same ballot as the rest of the midterm elections.
