The shooting was on Thursday, 15 October 2026, at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the dead were boys ages 5, 8, and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher, Megan Lambert. Police named the 5-year-old as Rhoam Summer. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher, Becky Drury, were injured. On Friday police named the shooter as Griffin J. John II, a former student who is not enrolled in Bend-La Pine Schools. He shot through the glass of locked double doors with a 12-gauge shotgun and fired about 15 rounds in one classroom, with about 44 rounds still on him. The first call, a long gun fired into a vehicle, came at 12:59 p.m. An armed parent followed him into the school and shot him. Police have left that parent unnamed. His family identified him as Kaylub Giamanco, who has two children at the school. Silver Rail serves kindergarten through fifth grade and has about 450 students.
Her first briefing was on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. It took three questions and ran under 15 minutes. She graduated from Pepperdine Law. She later said she had not passed the bar, after telling reporters she had practiced in China. On Friday, President Donald Trump told reporters he had urged her to reconsider, including the line, "Honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider." The White House told the BBC she would transition out of the job. POLITICO's account, from two White House officials and a third person, put the length of the tenure at five days.
The write-up is dated 16 October 2026. NIST adopted the curves in FIPS 186-2 in 2000. The P-256 seed C49D360886E704936A6678E1139D26B7819F7E90 is candidate 1842 from a run started at 01:52:34 UTC on 16 August 1997. The prime-curve seeds, including five from ANSI X9.62, are lrand48 output shifted right by 23 bits, and each recovered state regenerates all 160 bits. The clocks run from May 1997 through April 1998. An internal model found the match in under half an hour. The authors are John Wood, Henry de Valence, Ava Howell, Zack Voase, Lucy Sweet, Amir Omidi, Paul Crowley, Iain McGinniss, Nicholas Carlini, and Steve Weis. The $36,864 seed bounty from Filippo Valsorda goes to the Internet Security Research Group. Jerry Solinas, who died in 2023, had described a hashed joke passphrase in 2015. Six base points from May 1997, including P-192, match the FreeLIP generator later shipped in Victor Shoup's NTL, with the P-192 seed 20000. The base points for P-224, P-256, P-384, and P-521, and the binary curve B-163, stay unexplained. On the P-256 run, candidate 876 also yields a prime-order curve.
The IPCC said on 16 October 2026 that Skea suspended the session that night after it ran past its planned length and many delegations from least developed countries and small island states had left. The open items are the timelines for the three Working Group contributions to the Seventh Assessment Report and the budget. The session resumes at the earliest opportunity. The Panel agreed in Istanbul in January 2024 to produce those three reports, and it agreed on their outlines in Hangzhou in February 2025. The Synthesis Report is planned after the Working Group reports, by late 2029. In Lima in October 2025 the Panel agreed the 2027 methodology report on carbon dioxide removal and carbon capture, and the 2026 workplan for the Working Groups. The seventh cycle began in Nairobi in July 2023.
The weights post is dated 16 October 2026. Reflection introduced Beam on 5 October. The checkpoints are on Hugging Face in BF16, FP8, and NVFP4, with a speculative-decoding drafter. More than 40 partners are on the launch list. Day-zero serving includes Hugging Face Transformers, vLLM, and SGLang. Mirror, the companion harness, uses a Python frontend and a Rust core, with resumable chats and parallel agents in separate worktrees. The largest reinforcement-learning runs used about 1.3 billion sandboxes across training, evaluation, and ablations.
The Financial Times reported on 16 October 2026 that the proposals go out for consultation next week, after a consultation over the summer. The Authority designated Apple's mobile platform with strategic market status in October 2025. That designation lasts five years, and a breach can draw a fine of up to 10 percent of global turnover. Apple's stated reason for keeping near-field payments inside Apple Pay is security and fraud. Under the EU Digital Markets Act, Apple already opens that chip to other wallets. A June 2026 call for evidence said the consultation on near-field access would come in autumn 2026.
The paper is in Science, 15 October 2026, doi 10.1126/science.aee0658, "Empirical constraints on ice-cliff calving." Caroline Needell, in the MIT–Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program, is the author MIT News centers. Catherine Walker of Woods Hole and Jeremy Bassis of the University of Michigan are co-authors. The measurements come from ICESat-2, every three months from 2019 through 2023. The average cliff was about 30 meters. A few exceeded 100 meters, and one reached 127 meters. Those tall faces retreated faster than models that treat about 100 meters as the point where a collapse keeps exposing a taller face. The retreat was short, and the ice then advanced again. Stable cliffs had thicker mélange in front of them. Deeper water braced the face, and rises in the bed under the ice lined up with the places that stabilized. Support came from NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the DOMINOS project of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration.
The paper is Goldblum, Shi, Xu, and colleagues, Nature Medicine, 13 October 2026, doi 10.1038/s41591-026-04680-4. Thirteen adults were in the epilepsy monitoring unit at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, 11 on scalp EEG and 2 on intracranial EEG. Brian Litt is the senior author, at Penn's Center for Neuroengineering and Therapeutics. The app sent 58 real-time alerts. Patients answered about two-thirds and marked 22 as false. Only the original detector ran during the stays. In the replay, labels from the app cut the false-alarm rate 80.0 percent across the stay, from 0.736 per hour (interquartile range 0.201 to 1.090) to 0.104 per hour (0.060 to 0.187). The chat model in the methods is GPT-4o-mini. Patients and the system exchanged 1,307 messages.
The paper is Castillon, Xie, and colleagues, Nature Medicine, 12 October 2026, doi 10.1038/s41591-026-04689-9, open access. Ed Reznik is the senior author at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The cohort is the MSK-IMPACT sequencing protocol, 2010 through 2024, covering 589 histologies, under protocol 12-245 (NCT01775072). The study uses about 1.7 million weight measurements. Episodes follow the consensus definition of cachectic weight loss. The abstract says those episodes clustered near periods of disease progression, lined up with worse outcomes in nearly all cancer types, and shared a blood-test pattern of lower albumin and hemoglobin and higher liver enzymes. The paper reports 34 significant mutation associations across 14 cancer types. Code is at github.com/reznik-lab/cachexia.
Southwest said so at a media day in Dallas on 15 October 2026. The fleet is all Boeing 737s, and the FAA has already certified the Starlink antenna on the 737-700, the 737-800, and the MAX 8. Free Wi-Fi is for Rapid Rewards members, from takeoff to landing. The first equipped jet is due this summer, with more than 300 aircraft by the end of 2026. Southwest reported 810 Boeing 737s as of July. A February plan covered a subset of the fleet and left the Viasat aircraft on their current service. United said the same day that Starlink is on nearly half of its daily flights and that its own install runs through the end of 2027.
The post is dated 15 October 2026. MAI-Base-2 is a mixture-of-experts model with 80 billion active parameters and 2.8 trillion in total. Training used 16,000 GB200 GPUs for 38 days in August and September 2026, at 21 percent model FLOPs utilization and 89 percent goodput. Microsoft compares it with the open base model DeepSeek-V4-Pro-Base and says the recipe is 4 to 12 times more efficient in pre-training FLOPs. Kimi K3, Qwen3.8-2.4T-A95B, and MiMo-V2.6-Pro-RL appear in the comparison as post-trained checkpoints. The held-out code set is Microsoft's own codebase. The published prose gives that setup. The loss figures for the ladder and the full run are in the page source.
Dominion Energy is the utility based in Richmond, Virginia. A Skydio film from 9 October shows the X10 leaving Skydio docks and says the utility is scaling toward 140 docks, for inspection, emergency response, perimeter security, and feeder patrol. In June the unmanned-systems group had 23 drone-in-a-box units. The film counts two dedicated transmission pilots and says a docked check saves about 8 to 12 hours before a crew rolls. The program expects 6 to 8 pilots within two to three years. The 16 October announcement gives the count of 100 and leaves the dock model and the site list unstated.
Elon Musk set that standard on the afternoon of 16 October 2026 and spelled it "esthetic." A second note the same afternoon, at 17:24 UTC, said people can report those ads to the Ads account. The penalty he named is a bar from advertising.

Barss's previous book is The Impossible Man, a biography of Roger Penrose.
The tool is an entry in Cloudflare's agent-Git competition. Cloudflare opened the Artifacts beta on 1 October 2026, during Birthday Week, with Workers bindings and subscriptions to repository events. Open Integrity Forge runs on Artifacts, Workers, and Durable Objects. Each agent works on its own fork. Every push is checked against the repository's own rules. A merge to main waits for a person's passkey.
