The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the September index on 15 October 2026, on a release embargoed until 8:30 a.m. Eastern time. The seasonally adjusted 1.3 percent rise followed 0.5 percent in August and 0.2 percent in July. On an unadjusted basis, final demand rose 6.3 percent for the 12 months ended in September, the largest 12-month increase since 6.4 percent in December 2022. Final-demand goods rose 2.6 percent, the largest increase since that series began in December 2009. Energy jumped 10.8 percent and accounted for over 80 percent of the goods increase. Foods rose 1.2 percent, and goods less foods and energy rose 0.3 percent. Services rose 0.8 percent. Final demand less foods, energy, and trade services rose 0.5 percent on the month, after 0.3 percent in August, and 5.0 percent over the year. The September Consumer Price Index rose 0.6 percent on the month and 3.7 percent over the year. The index excluding food and energy rose 0.3 percent and 2.6 percent. The October Producer Price Index is scheduled for 13 November 2026 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time.
The model card and the Hugging Face write-up are dated 15 October 2026. Each mixture-of-experts layer has 256 experts and selects 8 of them. The network has 62 layers, a hidden size of 8,192, 128 query heads, and 16 key-value heads, and it takes a context of 1,048,576 tokens. It accepts text, images, audio, and video, and it writes text. The checkpoints are meta-models/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B, including an NVFP4 build. A BF16 copy is about 1.5 terabytes. A perception encoder of 1.8 billion parameters uses 14-by-14 patches. Audio is one token for each 80 milliseconds of 24 kHz mono sound. A llama.cpp Q2_K build on an M3 Ultra with 512 GB of memory ran at about 18 tokens a second and used about 304 GB. The template lists a knowledge cutoff of 4 January 2026. Meta released the smaller dense predecessor, Muse Glimmer, in August.
Bloomberg reported the adoption on 15 October 2026. The rules cover non-operating companies, and a May 2026 simulation under the proposal named Strategy, Metaplanet, and Yellow Cake. The Block reported that the final list of affected firms comes out on 11 November, with the November index review. The new test replaces an interim threshold that flagged a firm when digital assets were 50 percent of total assets, and it adds buffers based on the two most recent annual periods. Crypto Briefing reported a JPMorgan estimate of about $2.8 billion in passive selling if Strategy leaves the indexes, and said funds that track MSCI hold nearly 3.1 percent of Strategy. After the news, Strategy shares fell as much as 4.3 percent in after-hours trading and were later down about 1.5 percent. The consultation closed on 30 September. Strategy's September letter called the proposal discriminatory.
The complaint was filed Thursday, 15 October 2026, in U.S. District Court in California. Letters to several counties on Tuesday set a 48-hour deadline. Secretary of State Shirley Weber said her office never received a list and called the demand an emergency of the department's making, based on a methodology the state could not verify. Los Angeles County said the letter arrived 21 days before Election Day on 3 November, together with a thumb drive and a handwritten password, and that the county would leave the drive unopened. Governor Gavin Newsom called the suit an attempt to suppress voters three weeks before Election Day. Earlier this month a federal judge in Miami held a federal criminal statute on noncitizen voting unconstitutional. The department has at least 45 such cases pending. A separate October ruling said the department had unlawfully sought state voter rolls to cross-check against the SAVE database. In September the Supreme Court rejected an administration effort to restrict mail ballots for the 3 November election.
The Financial Times, Business Insider, and The Information reported the figures from an investor day on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, at Anthropic's San Francisco headquarters. Chief executive Dario Amodei and chief financial officer Krishna Rao presented. Third-quarter revenue of $16.8 billion was about 45 percent above the second quarter. The Information reported that the company told investors the distillation share is expected to fall further, and that a related third-quarter distillation figure was above $840 million. Five percent of $16.8 billion is $840 million.
The paper is in Nature, published 14 October 2026, doi 10.1038/s41586-026-11162-7. Paul Cohen's Laboratory of Molecular Metabolism at Rockefeller University worked with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Nicolás Gómez-Banoy is the first author. The scans run from 2009 through 2024 and were taken without a cooling protocol. Brown adipose tissue was recorded in six depots, and the measure was quantified in about 8,700 patients. The axillary depot had the strongest link to cardiometabolic measures, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and heart failure. Higher total brown-fat activity lined up with a stepwise lower prevalence of type 2 diabetes, atrial fibrillation or flutter, coronary artery disease, and heart failure after adjustment for age, body-mass index, sex, and outdoor temperature. In cells and in mice, the blood-pressure drug losartan raised brown-fat activity and energy use. The human results are associations. The same laboratory characterized brown fat in about 50,000 Memorial Sloan Kettering patients in 2021.
The paper was published on 14 October 2026. George Church's group at Harvard Medical School and the Wyss Institute worked with Antonio del Sol's group at CIC bioGUNE, part of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance. Wyss scientist Plesa led the work. A screen ranked genes by transcriptomic age, and SRSF1 came out on top. Overexpressing it in fibroblasts reduced senescence, proteostatic stress, and inflammaging. In aged mice, a liver-tropic adeno-associated virus carrying the gene raised median lifespan 14 percent. Harvard Medical School posted the account on 15 October 2026.
The paper is Sellars, Frank, Shim, and colleagues, Nature Medicine, published 14 October 2026, doi 10.1038/s41591-026-04717-8, trial NCT04024878. NeoVax is a set of synthetic long peptides plus poly-ICLC. Nivolumab starts at week 14 at 240 milligrams and can continue for up to two years. Patients receive five priming doses over three weeks and boosters at weeks 12 and 20. Of the 10 vaccinated patients, 1 was newly diagnosed and 9 were at a first recurrence, platinum-sensitive, after a platinum doublet. Nine of 12 evaluable patients in the recurrence cohort were vaccinated, 75 percent, with a 90 percent confidence interval of 47 to 93 percent. One of 9 patients in the newly diagnosed cohort was vaccinated, 11 percent. The paper reports no unexpected safety signals and no stoppages for toxicity. More than 70 percent of the vaccine targets were still detectable in cell-free DNA after a median 6.5 months from biopsy through chemotherapy. Dana-Farber researchers Mac Sellars and Cathy Wu are on the study. Cancer Network reported a median progression-free survival of 3.3 months, with a range from 1 month to not reached.
MIT News published the account on 14 October 2026. Judah Cohen, in MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, is the MIT co-author the piece centers. The method is called Probabilistic Bias Correction, and it post-processes forecasts from models already in use. On the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model, the correction doubled accuracy in that window and beat climatological averages. A Microsoft Research write-up said the correction improved the debiased ECMWF model on 98 percent of precipitation targets, 92 percent of temperature targets, and 91 percent of pressure targets. The entry MicroDuet, the correction on the ECMWF model plus PoET, placed first in the ECMWF AI Weather Quest for every variable and every lead time.
The system is arXiv 2610.18933, with code in SakanaAI/AI-Scientist-v3 and a companion tool, autoillustrate. The authors are Lange, Grillotti, Yamada, Charakorn, and Ha. The evaluation used 5 tasks, 9 language models, and 4 harnesses, for 70 campaigns at 20 idea iterations each. Reviewer scores and measured scores correlated at r = 0.44. The Error Diffusion paper, arXiv 2606.31700, is the campaign that reached external review, and ALIFE 2026 accepted it as an oral. On a Doc-to-LoRA task, multi-needle exact match rose from 52 percent to 98 percent. The lab's write-up is dated October 2026.
Olaoluwa Osuntokun published the design at layertree.tech, with code in lightninglabs/layertree and a short paper plus a full paper on the site. A member exits through a covenant. The construction uses no timelock and no pre-signed exit transactions. On proposed opcodes, an exit from a tree of one million members is about 1,040 virtual bytes with CCV, about 1,150 with FULL, about 1,560 with MID, and about 1,680 with MIN, the last of those using OP_CAT and TWEAKADD. A depth-16 tree, 65,536 slots, has a FULL exit of about 1,020 virtual bytes. A bare spend of the same output is about 111 virtual bytes, and an Ark-style exit is about 2,511 virtual bytes. Joining a cohort of about 1,000 members costs under 1 virtual byte per member. Sweeping an expired cohort of 51 leaves costs about 158 virtual bytes per leaf. Those opcodes are proposals, so the construction has no path under the consensus rules active on Bitcoin today.
Robin George Andrews wrote the Quanta account on 14 October 2026. The paper appeared in The Astrophysical Journal in June 2026. Michael Keim of Yale is an author. The three galaxies lie about 65 million light-years away and sit along a line. DF2, found in 2018 with the Keck telescopes, has at most 400 times less dark matter than expected for a galaxy of about the Milky Way's size and about 200 times fewer stars. DF4 was reported in 2019. DF9 contains about 100 million solar masses, in line with its ordinary matter. A usual dark-matter share would make it about 100 times more massive. The paper's account is that two galaxies collided, ordinary matter clumped into the three galaxies, and the dark matter passed through. Kinwah Wu of University College London argues the triplet was stripped while passing a group of massive galaxies. Dark matter is about 27 percent of the universe and about 85 percent of all matter.
