The General Authority of Civil Aviation said King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Jazan and Najran International Airport were struck, with three minor injuries and damage on the ground. The Houthis said their forces had targeted airports and military sites across southern Saudi Arabia. Jasem Al Budaiwi, secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council, called attacks on airports and civilian sites a dangerous escalation, and Kuwait's foreign ministry condemned them. The strikes landed as President Rashad al-Alimi's government pressed Operation Yemen Dawn, the offensive announced to retake Sanaa, after government forces said they had taken Mokha and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The Houthis have held Sanaa since 2014.
Vance told Reuters in Fairbanks, after a campaign stop for Senator Dan Sullivan in Alaska, that an agreement needs a real cut in enrichment, and he asked why Iran would keep 60 percent fuel if it does not want a weapon. He said Washington is talking to President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and still cannot see who decides in Tehran, after joint US-Israeli strikes at the start of the war killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. A provisional deal he brokered in September fell apart. President Trump rejected Tehran's latest offer. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on 4 October that US officials already know who speaks for Iran. Vance put the cost of the war at $3 billion a month. He said Iranian forces still hit commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz at times and have largely failed to stop energy exports through it. Trump carried Alaska by 13 points in 2024. Sullivan is in a close race with Mary Peltola. Vance said he has not decided whether to run in 2028.
At the rally on Monday he said a city could be taken out, then named Los Angeles and San Diego, and parts of the crowd cheered. Governor Gavin Newsom called the remark deranged and dangerous and told the California State Threat Assessment Center to monitor whether anyone treats the remark as an invitation to attack the state. Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles called it a threat. Mayor Todd Gloria of San Diego told him to keep the city out of the war talk. White House communications director Stephen Cheung said Trump was describing the threat if a nuclear Iran had continued, and wrote that Iran now has no nuclear programme, no navy, no air force, and no money. San Diego holds Naval Base San Diego, the Pacific Fleet's home port, and Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. About 70,000 service members and civilians work at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Los Angeles holds Space Systems Command and Los Angeles Air Force Base.
Tuesday's Short-Term Energy Outlook puts that fourth-quarter price $14 above last month's forecast. The agency expects Brent to average about $98 in 2026, 8 percent above the prior outlook, and $84 in 2027, $10 above the prior outlook. It assumes Middle East oil flows stay constrained through the fourth quarter, with shut-in production averaging 4.5 million barrels a day, then falling to 2.7 million barrels a day in the first quarter of 2027. It estimates inventories fell by 1.9 million barrels a day in the third quarter and will fall by another 0.7 million barrels a day in the fourth. Gulf flows, excluding Iran, were back above 81 percent of pre-war levels in September by pipeline, overland routes, and ship-to-ship transfers. The Strait of Hormuz carried about 20 percent of world oil before the war. The agency expects US retail diesel to stay above $6 a gallon in October and to average about $4.50 a gallon in 2027. The next outlook is due on 10 November.
Health Secretary Aden Duale said the Kenyan man had lived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for seven years, had been ill for about a month, travelled by road to Kampala, and flew to Nairobi on Saturday, where he died. President William Ruto said at least eight family members and 21 health workers were quarantined. Duale had earlier put identified contacts at 28. Another 23 passengers and four crew from the Uganda flight were being traced. Patrick Amoth, director-general at the health ministry, said contacts stay isolated for 21 days and leave if they test negative. Uganda recorded 20 cases and two deaths earlier this year and was declared free of the virus in August. Congo's current outbreak, its 17th, was declared on 15 May. The government said on Friday that more than 4,000 people had died and confirmed cases had reached 8,300 across seven provinces, the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country's history. The World Health Organization advised against travel and trade restrictions on Kenya, Congo, and Uganda. The West Africa outbreak of 2014 to 2016 killed more than 11,000 people.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the prize on Tuesday to Halzen, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. He was born in 1944 in Tienen, Belgium, took his PhD at KU Leuven in 1969, and is 82. He set out the idea in 1988: a neutrino that hits a nucleus in the clear, stable ice at the South Pole makes a flash that buried sensors can record. IceCube, a cubic kilometre of instrumented ice, was finished in 2011. The detectors later recorded neutrinos that had to come from outside the solar system. The prize is 12 million Swedish kronor, and he is the only laureate. Mark Pearce, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, said Halzen's team had opened a new kind of astronomy. Halzen took the call in Italy and said he was working on a proposal he hoped the prize would help. On Monday the medicine prize went to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for optogenetics. Laureates receive their prizes on 10 December.
The same government-aligned forces said they had repelled a Houthi attack in al-Salu, south of Taiz, and had killed 12 Houthi fighters. Houthi officials said they still hold territory taken in recent weeks, including ground the government says it has recovered at Bab al-Mandab. Reuters published video it said showed government fighters driving vehicles over Houthi opponents. UNHCR said more than 130,000 people have been forced from their homes inside Yemen since the beginning of August. The United Nations says more than 2.2 million children under five in Yemen are acutely malnourished. Residents in Taiz told Al Jazeera that food prices were rising while the fighting continued. The Houthis took Mokha, Dhubab, and the island of Perim last month before the government counter-offensive.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Ukraine launched more than 650 drones toward the capital and that most were shot down. Governor Andrei Vorobyov said 185 were destroyed or brought down over the surrounding region, seven people were injured, and 47 houses, four apartments, and three cars were damaged. The dead were a 71-year-old man pulled from the rubble of a house and a 20-year-old man in a nearby village. The head of Domodedovo, south of Moscow, said crews were restoring power to villages the drones hit. War blogger Yuri Podolyaka said a storage tank was hit at the Volodarskaya depot, the largest in the region, which holds diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel and feeds the capital's three main airports through the Transneft system. Officials had not confirmed that hit. He also said defences kept the drones off the Moscow oil refinery, which was last struck on 20 September, the main day of Russia's parliamentary election. Russia began the war in February 2022. Its recent strikes on Kyiv have included bridges over the Dnipro.
Pike, 50, survived two lethal injections last Wednesday and remained unconscious for days while hospital staff cleared the drug from her body. Her lawyers said on Tuesday that she is awake, speaking, handcuffed, and still in critical care, with severe damage to her arms, and that they expect a long recovery. Deborah Denno of Fordham Law School told the BBC that seven earlier prisoners survived a scheduled execution because nothing was injected, and that Pike is the only person known to have lived after the drug went in. Anaesthesiologist Joel Zivot, who advises the defence, said a normal dose in the bloodstream would have killed her and that the pentobarbital may have spread in the tissue under the skin. Her lawyers had warned that thrombocytosis and small veins raised the risk of a botched injection. She was 18 in 1995 when she and Tadaryl Shipp tortured and killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer at a job-training camp. Governor Bill Lee has suspended executions in Tennessee for the rest of the year, and the state's prisons chief has said he plans to resign. Her lawyers are due in court in Nashville on Wednesday.
The deal closed on Tuesday. Shares moved to the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SKYD and fell 2.5 percent on the day. David Ellison, whose father Larry Ellison founded Oracle, stays chief executive for strategy. Ynon Kreiz, the outgoing chief of Mattel, becomes co-chief executive for day-to-day integration and joined the board on Tuesday, along with former Activision chief Bobby Kotick. Tony Blair is joining as an adviser. Mark Thompson stays at CNN and Bari Weiss stays at CBS News, each reporting to Ellison and Kreiz. Casey Bloys of HBO will run the combined streaming service, which is due to fold HBO Max and Paramount+ together. The company has pledged at least 30 films a year for the first two years and 32 a year for the three after that, with 20 percent of production in the United States at first and more than 30 percent later. Missing the film quota would force a sale of its 49 percent stake in Miramax. Settlements with a group of states, led by California attorney general Rob Bonta, and with a writers' union cleared the lawsuits. The settlement requires an editorial board of five journalists, appointed by Ellison, with no more than two from the same party, within 180 days. The combined company is expected to carry about $80 billion of debt and has planned $6 billion of cost cuts. Netflix had an earlier deal for part of Warner and walked away after Paramount started a bidding war. President Trump called the merger great. Warner shareholders received an extra $41.9 million ticking fee for the days after the end of September.
Hanning, 80, led the Federal Intelligence Service from 1998 to 2005 and later worked as a private consultant. The federal prosecutor's office says he used classified intelligence to draft an analysis for one foreign service and kept contact with a second. Investigators have not named the countries. Police also arrested Manfred D, his former bureau chief, who stayed at the BND until this year and was chief of staff to Hanning's successors from 2012 to 2026. Prosecutors say Manfred D passed Hanning about 2,000 classified documents for money and is charged with aiding attempted treason and treasonous espionage. Local media said Hanning was arrested at his home in Nordwalde, near Münster, and Manfred D in Bavaria. Hanning is due in court on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu called Tuesday the most violent student demonstrations in decades. The interior ministry counted more than 250,000 marchers. Organisers counted 450,000. The government said 891 lycées were disrupted, almost a quarter of the country's high schools, and student unions said 1,800 were blockaded. Police used tear gas and water cannon in Paris, Strasbourg, Rennes, Toulouse, and Marseille. Paris police said about 300 masked people fought officers in the capital and that several storefronts were damaged. The interior ministry said 488 people were arrested on Tuesday and 48 security personnel were hurt that day. Lecornu told lawmakers that 215 teenagers, 85 school staff, and more than 700 police officers have been injured since the protests began. On Monday a 15-year-old lost a hand when a stun grenade exploded near a school in Lens. In a separate blockade, lawyers for a 14-year-old named Eden said a blow broke his jaw and knocked out teeth. BFM reported that President Emmanuel Macron called ministers to an emergency meeting. Trump said the protests showed migration in France was out of control. Macron's allies have lacked a parliamentary majority since 2024, and the government has been trying to cut public debt.
The Wall Street Journal reported the minister's interview on the same day hundreds of thousands marched over conditions in the schools. The cuts he described run to billions of euros. President Macron's allies lost their majority in the 2024 parliamentary election, and passing a budget has been beyond the government since then. Investors have treated French debt as one of the weaker links in the euro area after years of spending above receipts. The school marches and the budget fight are the same political fact: Lecornu's cabinet does not have the votes for an ordinary finance bill.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Census Bureau released the August figures on Tuesday. The deficit rose from a revised $92.8 billion in July, the largest gap since March 2025. The goods deficit increased by $12.8 billion, to $136.6 billion. The services surplus was $31.0 billion, up by less than $0.1 billion. Imports rose by $17.2 billion to a record $420.8 billion. Industrial supplies and materials accounted for $9.1 billion of that, led by crude oil and nonmonetary gold, and capital goods rose by $6.2 billion on semiconductors and other industrial machinery. Exports rose by $4.5 billion to $315.2 billion, with industrial supplies up $6.3 billion and capital goods up $1.3 billion, while pharmaceutical exports fell by $2.4 billion. The next trade release is scheduled for 4 November.
On the South Lawn on Tuesday, asked whether the tax would be suspended, he said the administration was thinking about it and gave no further step. A suspension needs an act of Congress. The House and the Senate have already left Washington to campaign for the 3 November midterms. The federal tax is 18.4 cents a gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents on diesel, rates last raised in the early 1990s, and it brings in more than $23 billion a year for highways and mass transit. He first raised a holiday on the tax in May, after the Iran war drove fuel prices up. AAA put the national average for regular gasoline at about $4.37 a gallon early this week, more than a dollar above a year earlier. Dropping the 18.4 cent levy would take about 4 percent off the price of a gallon at that level.
The package, announced on Tuesday, has two parts. A 20-year power purchase covers 890 megawatts from uprates at 11 existing nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Constellation said it will invest more than $4.3 billion in that work, with the first extra power expected in 2028, 4,400 existing jobs held, and 7,200 jobs during construction. A separate 15-year agreement covers 2,700 megawatts from Constellation's operating plants in PJM and is not tied to a single station. Amanda Peterson Corio, Google's global head of energy and power, said the purchases are meant to add capacity while the company's data centres grow. PJM serves about 67 million people and is the largest US grid.
The Financial Times reported that about $10 billion would be bank loans and about $30 billion would be investment-grade debt, with Apollo leading the sale to investors. The paper said the transaction is aimed at closing in 2027. Bloomberg carried the same account. The money is for Nvidia processors as SpaceX builds computing capacity alongside the rocket business. The companies had not published the terms themselves on Tuesday.
KCNA published both items on Wednesday. A commentary by international-affairs analyst Kim Myong Chol said US arms sales and military support for Taiwan were feeding tension in the strait, and it pointed at US-sold fighters newly arrived on the island. The first two of 66 F-16V Block 70 jets ordered in 2019 reached Taiwan last week. Beijing claims the island as its territory. In a birthday message to President Vladimir Putin, Kim said Pyongyang would keep expanding joint work under the comprehensive strategic partnership and that Russia's war to defend its sovereignty and territory would end in victory.
The Wall Street Journal reported that investigators found traces of Artex, an open-source agent written by Chinese security engineer Li Puhua, who uses the name Autumn, in attacks on at least seven financial firms. The National Police Agency's cyber unit opened a probe on Tuesday. The stolen files included annual income and personal-loan limits. After the first reports, Artex's authors added a line to the user guide forbidding unauthorised intrusion and theft. President Lee Jae Myung told a cabinet meeting that signs of AI use had shown up in the hacks and told ministries to limit the damage at once. The Financial Supervisory Service said Shinhan Bank and KB Kookmin Bank were among those hit, and Yonhap reported breaches at Hana Bank and Woori Bank as well. The watchdog shared 28 suspect IP addresses with the firms. Shares of South Korean cybersecurity companies rose by as much as 30 percent on Tuesday.
The worker died at the anti-plague institute in Irkutsk, and the regional governor cited pneumonic plague. Moscow now says screening of contacts has found no cases, and local officials have played down the scare. The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States warned Russia its failure to give details of the death violates international health rules. The BBC reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Moscow to share more of what it knows about the death.
Dozens more were wounded at the US Army logistics facility in the Kuwaiti port. Soldiers told the AP that commanders had been warned the site was open to a drone attack. The Army finished its review of the strike in June and has not released it. The attack came in the first days of the war that Vice President Vance, in this week's interview, described as seven months old. Kuwait was a logistics hub for US forces moving through the Gulf when the drone hit.
The company opened a public preview on Tuesday. The model is multimodal, with a context window of 1 million tokens, and it was trained from scratch on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell processors in Mistral's own data centres in Europe. The preview API is priced at $1.36 per million input tokens and $4.18 per million output tokens. The weights are scheduled for the end of October. Mistral says the model leads other open models on cybersecurity, finance, and law tasks, and that on visual grounding it scores above some closed models. The chief executive told Reuters it beats Chinese models in some areas.
The South African bank, part of FirstRand, is offering the five assets through its existing share platform, in a partnership with the local exchange VALR. Customers can trade from 10 rand, around the clock, inside Share Saver, Share Builder, Share Investor, and Share Zero. Purchases are funded from FNB accounts. The coins cannot be transferred onto or off the platform, which the bank says keeps the trades inside its security, compliance, and exchange-control rules. Sizwe Nxedlana, who runs FNB and RMB private banking and wealth, and Bheki Mkhize, who runs FNB wealth and asset management, said clients had been asking for the asset class. The bank said it will add coins later and publish material on the risks.
The ministry updated the lista suja on Tuesday. The register, begun in 2003, names employers found to have kept workers in conditions analogous to slavery. Rondônia is the first state government to go on it. The case involves two workers found in degrading conditions, and the file is still secret. Folha emailed the office of Governor Marcos Rocha, of the PSD, around 11:30 on Tuesday and had no reply. A separate operation by the ministry rescued 67 workers in conditions analogous to slavery in Cabo Frio.
