National Shield forces, the Giants Brigades, and the Tihama Resistance, backed by Saudi air strikes, said they retook Mokha on Monday afternoon and secured the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The same forces had seized Dhubab airport, 45 kilometres south of Mokha, and were besieging Houthi fighters in Dhubab town. Houthi-run media denied advances in Dhubab. President Rashad al-Alimi announced Operation Yemen Dawn on Sunday from Riyadh. The Saudi-led coalition said it was flying round-the-clock support and had destroyed 324 high-value targets since the offensive began. Al Masirah said Saudi strikes killed a schoolgirl and a woman in the Sanhan and Saawan districts of Sanaa on Monday, and Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdul Salam called the strikes dozens of massacres. Saudi naval forces destroyed weapons depots, explosive-boat warehouses, and sea mines in Hodeidah. The Houthis have held Sanaa since 2014. A Saudi-led coalition has fought them since 2015. Last month the Houthis took Mokha, Dhubab, and the island of Perim, also called Mayyun. A four-year informal ceasefire began to break in July, after the Houthis announced a maritime embargo following a Saudi blockade and a strike they blamed on the kingdom at Sanaa airport. The Strait of Hormuz is effectively closed by the war among the United States, Israel, and Iran, and Saudi exports have been moving through the Red Sea. The government health ministry said at least 959 people had been killed and 5,000 injured since 6 August. The United Nations said 197,000 people had been displaced.
Loud explosions were reported in Riyadh after the claim. BBC Verify had already matched thick smoke at the Aramco Riyadh Refinery on Saturday and at the Khurais Central Processing Facility on Sunday with earlier Houthi statements that a missile and drones hit those two sites. The Houthi Humanitarian Operations Coordination Centre told airlines that Saudi airspace, except the sky over Mecca and Medina, is a theatre of operations. Saudi Arabia has not confirmed a hit on the airport. The foreign ministry condemned the Houthi attacks and restated the kingdom's support for Yemen's recognised government. On Monday that government said its forces, with Saudi air support, had retaken Mokha and secured Bab al-Mandab, the strait the Houthis seized last month.
Amin Nasser told the Energy Intelligence Forum in London on 5 October that nearly 3 billion barrels of gross supply had been lost since the Iran war began, about half the volume that would have moved through the Strait of Hormuz. More than 1 billion barrels had come out of stocks, mostly commercial inventories, which fell from about 10 billion barrels to less than 6 billion. He said most of what remains sits in pipelines and tank bottoms, as much as 90 percent of the oil still counted on paper, and cannot be drawn. Refilling stocks while meeting demand could take up to two years and would add about 2 million barrels a day of demand over 18 months. Global demand is just over 100 million barrels a day. Aramco can make 12 million barrels a day of sustainable capacity available within days. Nasser said the cushion stays thin until Hormuz fully reopens and confidence returns. Last week the G7 and the International Energy Agency agreed to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude over four months. The agency said about 325 million of the 400 million barrels pledged in March had already gone out.
The order could come as soon as Monday and would expand use of dyed diesel, which farms and other off-road users already buy free of the federal highway tax. On-road diesel carries a federal excise tax of 24.4 cents a gallon plus a 0.1 cent Leaking Underground Storage Tank fee. Dyed diesel is exempt from the 24.4 cent tax. One account of the draft said the Transportation Department would coordinate state waivers of road-diesel taxes. The order had not been signed on Monday morning. Ten states, among them Alabama, Indiana, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, have already eased penalties for burning dyed diesel on public roads. Last week the G7 and the International Energy Agency released 100 million barrels of diesel and crude over four months. AAA put the national average for diesel at $6.32 a gallon on Monday, down from $6.53 on 22 September and about $2.63 above the price a year earlier.
The war with Iran began in late February and is in its eighth month. The United States has blockaded Iranian crude since July, and the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed, so Saudi exports have been moving through the Red Sea. President Trump said the rise at American pumps came from fuel rules in Democratic-led states and from Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries. Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday it would intensify strikes after President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv would hit those refineries. President Vladimir Putin said last week that the Ukrainian strikes had produced some results and had cost Russia about 1 percent of GDP.
Congress on Friday voted down decrees on tenant conditions, eviction limits, and a block on investors buying residential property. The People's Party and Vox voted no. The Socialist Workers' Party no longer commands a majority, and Sánchez had said he would wait until next summer. About 50 tenant marches filled streets on Saturday in Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona. Polls rank housing as the public's first concern, and the Socialists trail the People's Party. Corruption cases surround former party officials Santos Cerdán and José Luis Ábalos. Former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero denies benefiting from an airline bailout. Sánchez's wife, Begoña Gómez, is due to stand trial, and both deny misuse of public funds and of influence. In July more than 70,000 migrants reached Ceuta, and most were returned to Morocco.
The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awarded the prize for work on channelrhodopsin, the light-sensitive protein used in optogenetics. The three laureates share 12 million Swedish kronor. The physics, chemistry, and literature prizes, the peace prize, and the prize in economic sciences follow on the remaining days of the week, and the peace prize is due on Friday.
A Defence Department official said on Monday that the department had ceased use of Anthropic's products. Secretary Pete Hegseth labeled the company a supply-chain risk in February and set a stop date of late August, with a deadline of 27 February, the day before the United States and Israel attacked Iran. Claude, including the Mythos model, was still in use last week for research, analysis, intelligence, and operations against Iran, inside Palantir's Maven Smart System. Anthropic was the first frontier lab cleared for classified government work, in 2024. It refused to drop its limits on mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, called the supply-chain label unprecedented and unlawful, and sued. A judge ruled that the administration illegally retaliated against the company. The Pentagon holds contracts with Google, xAI, and OpenAI. President Trump met Anthropic chief Dario Amodei twice at the White House last week. Amodei said the company can win safely if it works with the president, and Trump called him great and fantastic. Anthropic declined to comment. Lauren Kahn of Georgetown's Center for Security and Emerging Technology, a former defence official, said the tools are hard to remove once they sit inside operations.
Bank of America, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley started the syndication on Monday, the Financial Times reported. About $42 billion is senior secured debt backed by Broadcom, rated A-minus, with residual-value support, and about $18 billion is junior debt without that guarantee. Blackstone is committing about $9 billion. Anthropic's IPO prospectus says Broadcom agreed to lend up to $42 billion, about a third of a $125.2 billion five-year chip lease, and that the notes can convert into equity. The chips are scheduled for delivery in 2027. Bloomberg had described the package as forming by 2 October.
Chairman Michael Selig set out the plan on 5 October at the Fordham Law Blockchain Regulatory Symposium. The agency issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking, the step that collects comment before a binding rule, for Regulation CTX on crypto asset transactions and Regulation CAM on crypto asset markets. The draft adds a venue category for exchanges that offer leveraged, margined, or financed retail crypto, with proof-of-reserves and anti-manipulation standards. Futures commission merchants would stand between those customers and the venue. A firm could take the federal path and still hold a state money-transmitter licence. The proposals cover those leveraged, margined, and financed retail trades under the commission's current authority. Selig cited FTX, where assets at CFTC-registered subsidiaries stayed segregated from the rest of the group.
On 5 October the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network withdrew a 2020 proposal that would have required a report on an unhosted-wallet transfer above $10,000 and a record above $3,000. It also withdrew a 2023 plan for a Section 311 special measure on mixers that would have collected wallet addresses, transaction hashes, and internet protocol addresses. The withdrawals are set for the Federal Register on 6 October. The agency cited the administration's deregulatory agenda and a July 2025 report on digital assets. It said it will take no further action on the 2020 proposal and will keep monitoring mixers.
The Securities and Exchange Commission approved a Cboe BZX rule change on 2 October under delegated authority of the Division of Trading and Markets. Volatility Shares filed on 10 August, the notice appeared on 19 August, and the file drew no comments. The six funds cover bitcoin, ether, gold, silver, crude oil, and natural gas. Each is a commodity trust under the Securities Act of 1933, holds CME futures and cash, and targets three times the daily move of its reference. A registration statement still has to take effect before shares can be sold. Earlier U.S. crypto products stopped at twice the daily move, and staff letters in December 2025 pushed back on leverage above that level. Eric Balchunas of Bloomberg noted the approval.
Governor Kathy Hochul's Executive Order No. 65 took effect on 5 October under Executive Law section 28 and runs through 4 November. The state counted 108 measles cases in 2026 through 3 October, 7 in New York City and 101 elsewhere, including 92 since 15 July in under-immunized rural communities across 18 counties. Otsego, Seneca, and Steuben account for most of that rural cluster. New York recorded 48 cases in the whole of 2025. Pennsylvania had 977 cases and five deaths as of 2 October in rural counties along the state line. The order lets paramedics, advanced emergency medical staff, midwives, and pharmacists give the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine, with pharmacists authorised down to age 2, and it lets nurses order tests. Doses must reach the immunisation registry within 72 hours. Local health departments have given more than 1,000 doses in rural areas since 15 July. Measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000. This is the first statewide measles disaster declaration since the surge in 2025.
Interviewers spoke to 4,506 adults from 30 September through 5 October. The margin of error is about 2 points. The 32 percent reading matches September. The earlier floor in this series was 33 percent, reached in December 2017 and again in August 2026. Approval among Hispanic adults is 24 percent, the lowest of either term. Among Hispanic registered voters, 26 percent favour Republicans and 52 percent favour Democrats for the 3 November midterms. Trump won nearly half of the Hispanic vote in 2024, after about a third in 2020. Inflation and the cost of living are the top concern, named by 33 percent of adults, and 78 percent of Latino voters disapprove of his handling of living costs. Registered voters overall prefer Democrats by 44 percent to 37 percent. Independents split 37 percent Democratic, 21 percent Republican, and 28 percent undecided. Voters under 50 prefer Democrats by 18 points. Among voters 50 and older the Republican edge is 2 points, down from 8 points in December.
The blast came on Monday morning outside Lycée Auguste Béhal in Lens, in the Pas-de-Calais. Prefect François-Xavier Lauch said the boy's life was not in danger. A police union told AFP the boy may have picked up a sting-ball grenade, while La Voix du Nord quoted a girl who said he had not. Mayor Sylvain Robert said the circumstances were still unclear, and the IGPN, the national police inspectorate, will investigate. Students threw stones, fireworks, and mortars, and CRS riot police deployed. Geffray said 589 schools were affected on Monday, down from 735 of about 3,700 on Friday. At least 190 students have been injured since the protests began in late September. Last week Eden, 14, suffered a double fracture of the jaw from a tear-gas grenade in Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône, and Nuñez ordered an investigation. More than 5,000 people have been arrested, about 85 percent of them minors. The student union USL called more protests for Tuesday, and the government promised a consultation platform. Jean-Luc Mélenchon compared the unrest to 1968.
The Royad Mammadov went down about 30 nautical miles south of Sfântu Gheorghe, outside Romania's territorial waters and inside its exclusive economic zone. The alert came at about 11:00 local time, 09:00 GMT. President Volodymyr Zelensky said two drones hit the civilian ship in neutral waters, the captain was killed, another sailor was unaccounted for, and 11 crew members from Azerbaijan and India were rescued. The cargo was corn, and the ship is Turkish-owned. Russia has not commented on this vessel. Its defence ministry had earlier said it struck two cargo ships, and on Sunday it said strikes would intensify after Zelensky said Kyiv would attack Russian refineries. President Vladimir Putin said last week that those Ukrainian strikes had got some results and that Russia had lost about 1 percent of GDP. Martin Jaeger, head of Germany's domestic intelligence service, the BfV, said on Monday that Germany was in danger of being drawn into a violent conflict and that Russia was waging a shadow war.
The technician, a woman in her late twenties identified by the first name Daria, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia and the Far East. Governor Igor Kobzev said samples showed no microorganisms linked to her work. Rospotrebnadzor inspected the institute and declared no emergency. Unconfirmed accounts said a test tube broke, or that she had travelled to Buryatia, on the Mongolian border, where plague circulates in marmots. Russian media said nearly 200 contacts were under observation. President Trump said Washington was looking at the case very strongly, that he had not spoken to the Kremlin, and that the United States would help. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the worker appears to have been infected, that people are in quarantine, and that officials should stay focused on the case. Simon Clarke of the University of Reading said pneumonic plague, caused by Yersinia pestis, is nearly always fatal without treatment, responds to antibiotics, and can pass from person to person. The institute was founded after an outbreak in the 1920s.
Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, leader of the Parti Québécois, has said he would hold a referendum on independence if his party forms the government. Christine Fréchette of the Coalition Avenir Québec is the incumbent premier. Mark Carney is prime minister in Ottawa. Polls closed at 20:00 Eastern time. The first dispatches carried no finished count, and the early share of ballot boxes was too small to name a winner.
The Monday visit comes two weeks after a security agreement between the United States and Greenland. Iceland is a founding member of NATO and does not keep a standing army. The Icelandic Coast Guard carries out defence-related duties at sea.
Al Jazeera carried the account from Israeli media. The British ambassador is said to have told Israel that London will request the departures if Israel does not reverse the closing of the British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem. Britain keeps that consulate, which deals with Palestinian affairs, separate from its embassy to Israel in Tel Aviv.
CVE-2026-88779 is a memory overflow, catalogued as CWE-119 and scored 8.7 on CVSS version 4. It affects customer-managed NetScaler ADC and Gateway systems configured as a SAML service provider or a SAML identity provider. Citrix described the effect as a denial of service. WatchTowr said crashes of the SAML service reboot the appliance on the sixth crash, and that the flaw did not yield reliable code execution in their tests. Attackers were already using it, and CISA added it to the known-exploited vulnerabilities catalog. U.S. federal civilian agencies must remediate by 7 October 2026. Fixed builds are 14.1-73.41 and 13.1-64.28. Citrix published the advisory on 4 October after administrators reported reboots on Friday. Two critical flaws disclosed on 27 September remain the immediate backdrop: CVE-2026-88771, pre-authentication remote code execution scored 9.5 in a default configuration, and CVE-2026-88772, a memory overflow scored 9.5 in DTLS on VPN virtual servers. Those two were patched in 14.1-73.37 and 13.1-64.23 under bulletin CTX697096, and both were exploited before the disclosure.
Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party took 47.48 percent in the first round and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Workers' Party took 44.63 percent. A first-round win needs more than half of valid votes, so the two meet again on 25 October. Temer was president from 2016 to 2018. São Paulo governor Tarcísio de Freitas has said he will campaign for Flávio, and Flávio was due in Goiás for an endorsement from Ronaldo Caiado, who took 2.21 percent on the first ballot. The B3 exchange traded at a record as the first-round result settled.
SpaceX shares traded above $160 on Monday, a price that put the company's market value above $2.23 trillion. Counting that equity at the new price takes Musk's fortune back through $1 trillion. The shares had fallen after the initial public offering and have now retraced that slump.
The year-to-date share is 17.47 percent. BYD sold more than 20,000 cars in the month, and Chery's brands together sold 32,000. The Jaecoo 7 was the month's top seller. The BYD Sealion 7 and the Seal placed third and fourth among battery-electric cars. Chinese brands registered 223,000 cars in Britain in the first eight months of 2026, more than 15 percent of the market then. Britain's tariff on Chinese cars stands at 10 percent. The European Union has added duties of about 45 percent on SAIC and about 27 percent on BYD. The Times has reported that Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds is drawing up a British package aimed at those EU rates.
